The roots of the Malian griot, an intense dialogue with his mother for a stunning effect! Baba et sa maman (Baba and his Mother) is more than just an album of traditional Malian music. It is a tribute to both history and to ones own roots: in this case, those of a great griot, master of the word, and son and grandson of those who for half a century have been at the head of a very special caste in Mali, as feared as they are venerated. It has taken several years to put together this magical collection of songs.
On the one hand, this was due to the actual geographical distance (Baba moved to Italy fi fteen years ago), while on the other hand, it was due to the intangible nature of feelings, which in large projects often follow no temporal rules or guidelines. purely radical acoustic magic, with no overdubs or studio tricks, only the sweet and austere voice of Djeli Mah Damba Koroba, accompanied by ancestral bambara chordophones and traditional percussion, all under the direction of the unique and inimitable master Baba Sissoko. A special album that, through the sounds of memory, uses a language whose perception is immediately comprehensible and familiar, regardless of the differences of place, class and culture.

African Griot Groove
Cantastorie girovago più per scelte di vita che per necessità, Baba Sissoko ne ha viste di tutti i colori. Ora a fianco di Youssou N'Dour e Oumou Sangare; il giorno dopo ad arricchire le tessiture latino americane di Buena Vista Social Club o quelle più jazzate dell'Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Da una quindicina d'anni ha deciso di fermarsi un po' in Calabria da dove il mondo africano sembra essere più visibile, non solo per vicinanze geografiche, ma anche e soprattutto per quelle umane.
Come un vero griot (un cantastorie ante-litteram) è capacissimo di attingere a un patrimonio di suggestioni e trasformarle in musica con la stessa esperienza di un mago che sa perfettamente cosa e come raggiungerlo con una formula magica. In questo suo ultimo disco riesce a mescolare, nel calderone magico, echi di una cultura musicale infinita e patriarcale (quella africana) con l'elettricità del mondo occidentale ("Dounya").
Si respira, si ascolta, si assapora continuamente l'essenza di una realtà in trasformazione. Che non rinuncia alle sue origini e si rapporta con senso di grande creatività alla modernità ("Ambita Bakadaji"). Evita come la peste le trappole mainstream della world music. Cerca con decisione e quasi con testardaggine (gli innumerevoli ostinato di cui si compongono i brani) un dialogo come musicisti in una inimmaginabile jam session interculturale ("Afrika/Afro Blues").
Linguaggi secolari che si sciolgono al ritmo di congas e ngoni e donano una cascata di musicalità che ci rimanda all'origine di musiche ancestrali e affascinanti.

Baba Sissoko & South Connotation Mons 2015
Dans le cadre de Mons 2015 Capitale Européenne de la Culture, le quartet montois
SOUTH CONNOTATION propose une création en invitant François DECAMPS et Baba SISSOKO.
L'idée de ce projet est depuis le départ de proposer une fertilisation mutuelle entre les répertoires respectifs de Baba Sissoko et de South Connotation.
Nourri d'influences multiples mais en profonde symbiose avec les traditions musicales d'Afrique de l'Ouest et notamment celles du Mali, l'univers sonore de la formation montoise ne demandait qu'à croiser sur scène celui de ce grand musicien, qui en est sans aucun doute l'un des plus dignes représentants.
Apportant sa très large palette instrumentale et vocale ainsi que quelques-unes de ses magnifiques compositions, et porté par la complicité de longue date qui unit les musiciens de South Connotation, Sissoko nous offre ici la quintessence de son art.
Le guitariste François Decamps donne quant à lui au projet, avec sa personnalité musicale et ses qualités d'improvisateur, une couleur jazz qui vient avec bonheur enrichir le propos.
